DATIN AZANIN DATO’ AHMAD
AMN, SMK, AMP.
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
CHOREOGRAPHER
DANCER
THE EARLY YEARS
Cradled in a ‘kain tenun’, a child absorbed
ancestral-traditions through her great-grandmother. The gentle hands of
Opah Wan Som instilled a steady rhythm that is the heartbeat of dance. At
Jalan Pandak Akat, Batu Gajah, Perak, the soul of generations of classical
dancers flowed and became the pulse of Azanin Ahmad, Malaysia’s
internationally celebrated classical dancer and choreographer. Azanin
Ahmad was culturally schooled by great-grandmothers and grandmothers.
Rhythm, music, song, dance, legends and history are her life-blood. Azanin
transformed these pulses into a majestic presence through sheer artistry.
THE CREATOR
In her capacity as Artistic Director, Azanin has devoted much
of her energy to researching the classical art forms and the performing
arts of Southeast
Asia and has presented original and masterpieces of dance theatre
productions based on the results of her study. After obtaining an
Economics Degree from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, she
returned to Malaysia in the late seventies to embark deeply into the study
of the great cultural heritage of the region with the desire of
preserving, nurturing, developing and promoting our historical and
cultural experience.
